PXmart Self-Checkout Kiosk
How do you design a fast, user-friendly self-checkout system for Taiwan's largest supermarket chain, all while working with a unique, vertical screen size?
2021
The Challenge
My challenge was to create an intuitive and efficient experience that would speed up the checkout process for millions of shoppers, ensuring a smooth transition from traditional cashier lanes to a modern self-service system.

The Approach
My design approach focused on three key principles: clarity, guidance, and real-world testing.
Clear Information Hierarchy
I designed a clear information hierarchy to ensure a consistent experience at every step of the checkout journey. By carefully organizing the on-screen information, I guided customers through each stage, from scanning items to making payments, with a logical and predictable flow.

Realistic Visuals for Intuitive Guidance
I designed the visual language for the interface, using clear, realistic icons and illustrations. The team and I worked together to create visual cues that guide the user’s actions—such as scanning products and making payments—making the checkout process quick and seamless.

Iterative Testing on Physical Hardware
A core part of my design process was to test and refine my designs directly on the actual kiosk screen. This real-world testing allowed me to make crucial adjustments for a physical touch environment, such as optimizing button sizes and placement for easy tapping and ensuring the user flow felt natural in a real-world shopping scenario.

The Outcome
My design successfully transformed the checkout experience, creating a fast, efficient, and user-friendly system. The self-checkout kiosks have been deployed in multiple PX Mart stores in Taipei.
